SwyMonitor User Tips

The Main Form Display

The main screen / form shows activity of the

  • CPU Activity
  • RAM Usage
  • LAN (or Internet) send or upload speed
  • LAN (or Internet) receive or download speed
  • Disk write speed
  • Disk read speed

Access to More Info and Settings

To get access to more information or the underlying main form settings, click and drag the bottom border of the main screen / form to expose the More and Settings buttons.  Then click on the appropriate button to get to the desired facility.

How to use the Resource Monitor

Clicking on the main form 'More' button will invoke TechRepublic's Resource Monitor facility.  For further information on how to get the best out of the Resource Monitor, go to this web site

The TechRepublic Resource Monitor is normally bundled with the Microsoft Windows Operating System (XP, Vista, 7 and 8).

Setting the Bar Graph

Clicking on the main form 'Settings' button will open the settings form.  There the behaviour of the green bar graph may be managed.  For users who don't want to be distracted by a moving green bar graph when the PC is under normal load, the Threshold setting may be used to prevent the bar graph showing at readings lower than that set.  On the other hand the sensitivity of the graph may be managed by setting the Max or upper limit where the bar graph will be fully filled with colour.

Setting the Bar Graph Alert

More settings are exposed by click and dragging the right hand border.  There will be found settings above which the colour of the bar graph will change colour.  This facility is provided for those who want to be alerted, by a significant colour change when a particular parameter is exceeded.

General Settings

Within the Settings form is a General tab.  There you will find several settings;

  • Auto Start during PC Startup will ensure SwyMonitor will start every time you boot start the PC
  • Show Tips will show helpful hints when the mouse pointer is hovered over a field in the Settings form

Fails to Operate

Sometimes the monitor will fail to operate.  The SwyMonitor relies heavily on Microsoft's Performance Monitor to be working correctly and sometimes this system gets corrupt.  If you open Microsoft's Perfmon program (Start>Run>Perfmon) and see an error like (it may take a few minutes to display the error):

Unable to add these counters:

\Memory\Available MBytes
\Memory\% Committed Bytes In Use
\Memory\Cache Faults/sec
\Memory\Cache Faults/sec
\PhysicalDisk(*)\% Idle Time
\PhysicalDisk(*)\Avg. Disk Queue Length
\Network Interface(*)\Bytes Total/sec

then there is a problem with a corrupt performance counters being referenced by Microsoft's performance monitor.

Search on-line for a phrase like "How to rebuild performance counters on Windows 7" on how to correct the problem.
